    Minimum wages to increase

    June 06, 2017 - 3:50pm

The Fair Work Commission (“FWC”) has handed down its Annual Wage Review decision today, which will bring an increase of 3.3% to the adult award minimum wage rate.

    The increase

In monetary terms, the national adult minimum wage will increase by $22.20 per week or 59 cents per hour. This will take the national minimum wage for adults to $694.90 per week, or $18.29 per hour, based on a 38 hour week.

Junior rates based on a percentage of adult rates will automatically rise by a proportionate amount.

In making its decision, the FWC took into account key changes in the economic environment, specifically the growing economy and subdued inflation.

    Operative Date

The increases will take effect from the first full pay period which starts on or after 1 July 2017.

    Action required

Members do not need to make any changes to minimum wage payments until July.

Existing over-award payments may be used to ‘offset’ the increase in the minimum rates.

Printing Industries will shortly provide updated award wage schedules for members.

Members with enquiries regarding the above should contact your local Printing Industries’ Workplace Relations and Legal Services Team member by phoning 1800 227 425.
