On Friday, 4th November 2016 Printing Industries Association of Australia hosted its 23rd annual Printing Industries Craftsmanship Awards (PICA) in Queensland. By 5:30pm the Connaught room in the Pullman Hotel, Brisbane was full with a buzz of industry members viewing the Awards entries. Just two weeks prior to the event the judging of what seemed an endless number of entries had taken place. The Judges were Peter Florentzos, Julie Bebbington, Ron Jackson and Hugh Edwards, who spent many hours over 2 days deliberating on the entries to provide the winners for the night. The formal awards ceremony gave way to the Legends Gala dinner which was formally opened by Printing Industries CEO, Andrew Macaulay.
It was ‘a night to celebrate print and the people of the industry’, said Macaulay.
Major sponsors of the night, Konica Minolta, kindly donated 3D models of the first European printing press, the Gutenberg letter press, for the table displays and each guest received a unique 3D napkin holder to take home.
The MC, Evan Bancroft, provided funny anecdotes about the industry and kept the pace of the night lively and entertaining. The PICA committee included Tom Lusch - Chair, Simon Carmody, Simon Rowbottom, Mary Kiely-Scales and Evan Bancroft who were commended and thanked for creating a new format for the Awards evening and introducing Youngcare charity to the evening. They donated time and effort to make the night the success it was.
Youngcare told the audience how they help young people with disabilities and followed with a fabulous fundraiser including a round of Heads and Tails, a raffle and a live auction. The evening raised over $4885 for this worthy charity.
Rob Brown was the comedian for the night and provided a set of hilariously risqué jokes that had our audience shocked, amazed and in stitches.
The stars of the night were our Legends winners Ken Doggett, KW Doggett Fine Paper, and Peter Carmody, Spot Productions. They were nominated for over 40 years of mentoring and contribution to the industry and were each presented with a Legends Trophy. The room went totally quiet with respect when they talked about their experiences. Susan Heaney was felicitated with the Women in Print Legend Award for her significant contribution to the industry.
To end the night, the ‘Tatty Tenors’ delighted the crowd with renditions of Italian, Spanish and English Opera encouraging the audience to sing and participate with vigour, and many finished off dancing to music from the 80’s and 90’s.
